Flexion-Distraction Technique

Flexion-Distraction Technique is an effective and gentle treatment for lower back pain.  It helps to decompress the spine and remove pressure placed on the vertebral disc.  It is used for treating symptomatic disc injuries and secondary pain that is felt down the leg.

It involves the use of a specialized table that gently stretches while slightly flexing the spine in a pumping rhythm. This allows the doctor to isolate the area of disc involvement and apply pressure to the specific areas that will relieve pain, by allowing the disc to move away from the impinged nerve, reducing inflammation of the nerve root, and eventually the associated pain into the leg.

Most people experience relief of symptoms within 3-5 treatments.  Due to the gentle nature of the treatment, it is suitable for people of all ages and body types, including pregnant women.

Dr. Carly May applies this technique for the treatment of:

  • Bulging or herniated discs
  • Msyofascial pain syndrome
  • Numbness of tingling
  • Osteoarthritis or degeneration of the spine
  • Radiculitis or nerve pain
  • Sciatica
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Scoliosis
  • Spasm of low back muscles
